We're underway at the Bernabeu.
Good evening and welcome to the live commentary of the Champions League clash between Real Madrid and Roma at the Bernabeu.
Real Madrid begin their campaign to win the competition for a fourth time in a row. The club have dominated European football for the past three years, adding their 13th crown to their collection by defeating Liverpool in Kiev in May. Julen Lopetegui has the challenge of continuing Zinedine Zidane's legacy at the Bernabeu, starting at the Bernabeu this evening.
Let's take a look at the two sides this evening, starting with Madrid.
Roma played above expectations to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League last season. The Italian outfit took the scalp of Barcelona in the quarter-final stage, producing a brilliant performance at the Olympic Stadium to advance to the last four. Eusebio Di Francesco's men almost produced similar heroics against Liverpool, but were denied a place in the final. The club will be hard pressed to match their efforts of last term, although they remain a talented side.
REAL MADRID (4-3-3): Keylor Navas; Daniel Carvajal, Raphael Varane, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo; Luka Modric, Casemiro, Toni Kroos; Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, Isco.
Real Madrid subs: Nacho Fernandez, Mariano Diaz, Lucas Vazquez, Marcos Llorente, Marco Asensio, Dani Ceballos, Thibaut Courtois.
Roma subs: Bryan Cristante, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Diego Perotti, Patrik Schick, Ivan Marcano, Davide Santon, Antonio Mirante.
Lopetegui has made three changes to his side from their 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao at the weekend. Navas comes into the side between the sticks to dislodge Courtois. Casemiro comes into the midfield, while Isco gets the nod to start in the front three. As a result, Ceballos and Asensio drop out of the starting line-up.
Roma have made three changes to the side that allowed Chievo to come from two goals down to claim a point in their last outing. Fazio replaces Juan Jesus in the back four, while Zaniolo and De Rossi replace Pellegrini and Cristante in the middle of the park. Zaniolo makes his debut following his move from Inter in the summer.
Isco's strike on the stroke of half-time handed Real Madrid a deserved lead at the break. The home side dominated the opening 45 minutes, but struggled for a breakthrough. However, the Spaniard displayed a clinical edge from the set-piece, curling his effort into the bottom corner. He has made Julen Lopetegui's teamtalk slightly easier for the Madrid boss, who would have been lamenting his side's poor finishing otherwise.
Roma were disappointing in the first half, allowing Madrid to dicate the tempo of the game. The Italian outfit did have a couple of moments on the break, but Eusebio Di Francesco will want to see a lot more from his team in the second period.
ROMA (4-3-3): Robin Olsen; Alessandro Florenzi, Kostas Manolas, Federico Fazio, Aleksandar Kolarov; Nicolo Zaniolo, Daniele De Rossi, Steven Nzonzi; Stephan El Shaarawy, Cengiz Under, Edin Dzeko.
Real Madrid are off and running in their quest for a fourth Champions League crown on the bounce. Julen Lopetegui's men eased to victory over Roma this evening thanks to goals from Isco, Gareth Bale and Mariano Diaz. The Spanish side were in complete control of the contest from start to finish as the visitors failed to make an impression at the Bernabeu. Madrid will be keen to wrap up their place in the last-16 as quickly possible after being handed a favourable draw in Group G.
Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
